The media, social & traditional, gasped for air a few times yesterday upon hearing Daniel Johns is actually releasing some of his musical work. There have been whispers of writing sessions, talk of movie soundtracks and solo albums, but not much has materialized since the ‘indefinite hiatus’ of Silverchair dashed hopes of a follow up to Young Modern.
Despite his lack of engagement with the media over the last (NEARLY 20 YEARS, GEEZ), we still seem to be mesmerized by what he might produce. In the anticipation for January 17 and the full release of his new collaboration with local rapper 360, here are some other tunes that Daniel has had a part in, outside of the band he’s best known for, Silverchair.
I Can’t Believe It’s Not Rock – EP (2000)
The story goes that this release wasn’t planned at all. Daniel and Paulmac were mucking around for the fun of it, and in the end, threw caution to the wind and just put a five-track EP out there. More evidence after Neon Ballroom that Daniel wasn’t content with sitting still, and was eager to try new things.

The Dissociatives – Horror With Eyeballs (2004)
The famous “official” collaboration with Paulmac. What’s less publicized is that both members of The Presets are in this band. They released one self-titled album with some solid success. The third single to me is the most incredible, and it hasn’t aged – it’s a belter.
Natalie Imbruglia – Satisfied (2006)
They were married for 4 years, it’s not surprising they played around in the studio a bit. Two Johns-produced songs appeared on her third album Counting Down the Days, this one featuring Johns’ vocals. The song is drenched in his sound, especially the ooooohh and aaaahhh sunshine-y harmonies. It’s a really bloody nice pop song. Certainly not Israel’s Son.
Solo, commissioned by QANTAS – Atlas (2011)
Daniel’s now comfortably in the position to do whatever the hell he likes. QANTAS approached him to write a new song to use in their advertisements, and it’s a song that really helps you feel as if you’re flying. Of course he got the help of an orchestra, and it’s worth a few listens. No lyrics – just beautiful music.
w/ 360 – Impossible (2014)
And with that backdrop, the next song we hear from Daniel will be with a rapper and something that sounds an awful lot like dubstep. The gates are wide open and whatever Daniel does from here, we can’t expect anything! All bets are on!
This week “Team Daniel Johns” made the first steps towards a publicity campaign for 2014. at www.danieljohns.com you will now see links to a mailing list, Twitter and Facebook page links. These are all taken care of by management, not Daniel himself. If you were a part of the old Silverchair mailing list/fan club, they will still have your details. Twitter handle is @DanielJohnsHQ
Signs that a release for a solo single/album may not be too far away! We’ve heard of writing collaborations with Kimbra, Veronicas, Luke Steele and more… I’m quite excited for this year to play itself out.
